Travel Literature

I find travel literature to be a useful tool when one finds oneself in a situation without any future plans of getting away. It can be a nice respite to sit down and enjoy reading about someone else's trials and tribulations while on the road. A few of the books I have read include:

A Trip to The Beach by Melinda Blanchard and Robert Blanchard Fall/Winter 2004 The Blanchards escape life in the fast lane to open a restaurant in their island paradise of Anguilla. I really was into travel books before I read this, even though I had never read one before. I would stare at them in Barnes & Noble. I finally got up the courage to buy one. Soooo glad I did. Although it was pretty slow moving at times, it was cool, because that was the pase of their lives. They also survive through Hurricane Luis. Awesome book and people. (Biographical)

Pasquale’s Nose By Michael Rips. Very Good. An American man; his wife, Sheila; and their newborn girl move to the little, close nit town of Sutri, Italy. Its basically a lot of anecdotes about his time sitting at the Guidi Café and other things. A good and easy read.

I recently saw the book Apples are from Kazakstan and became interested in that book. I hope to read it sometime soon. It seems to be a record of a man's trip through a forgotten country in the minds of the West. I hope that it was written recently as I have run into frustrating situations when travel memoirs are from too many years ago. They can be good as well as stories from the past decade, however there is no hope of me actually being able to visit the same places if the story takes place too long ago. This is one of the troublesome aspects of reading travel literature.
